| Q: | Will the new boathouse be named? |
| A: | The new boathouse will be known as the Andy Geiger Boathouse at Griggs Reservoir in tribute to retired Athletics Director Andy Geiger. During his 11 years in Columbus, Andy Geiger was regarded as one of the most respected leaders in college athletics. He administered a program with 36 sports, nearly 1,000 student-athletes and an operating budget that annually exceeds $85 million. Andy Geiger was a rower and a great promoter of the sport. In fact, rowing is one of three women's sports he added while at OSU. The boathouse is a fitting tribute to his legacy.
| Q: | Is there a community purpose for the boathouse? |
| A: | An important feature of this new facility is that it will serve as a community resource to attract and train future rowers from throughout greater Columbus. In this way the Andy Geiger Boathouse will provide a strong connection to the community that will help rowing prosper and attract support in central Ohio.
| Q: | How and why is GCRA contributing to this building? |
| A: | We feel strongly that this building would not be possible without our involvement and efforts over many decades to establish rowing on Griggs Reservoir. After many, many years of successfully pursuing our goal of moving into a new boathouse we now need to make a contribution to finance the transition from our Wyandotte shelter. We have asked our officers and trustees to use this contribution as a good-faith offering during lease negotiations with the city.
| Q: | How much is GCRA contributing to this building? |
| A: | To obtain the right to name a bay a donation of $50,000 is required. Since GCRA will occupy two bays we are contributing $100,000 to acquire naming rights for those two bays.
| Q: | How is GCRA planning on managing its donation? |
| A: | We have established a fundraising committee that is spearheaded by former trustee Nick Ashooh. The committee has kicked off a fundraising effort with a minimum goal of $100,000.
| Q: | Why are we asking GCRA memberhip to donate money? |
| A: | The importance of support from the GCRA membership cannot be overemphasized. Before a wider appeal for support is made in the community, we must show that we are committed to this facility and that we are doing our part financially to make it a reality.
| Q: | What happens if we don't donate the $100,000? |
| A: | We will lose naming rights for the bays we will occupy.
| Q: | What happens if we raise more than $100,000? |
| A: | If we raise more than $100,000, we place the money in an endowment fund to use the interest it generates to defray future costs related to the upkeep and maintenance of the building and our two bays.
| Q: | How can I help? |
| A: | The GCRA board is recommending a pledge of support of $1,000 from each member. To learn more about pledging funds to the new boathouse, go to the Donate Funds page.
| Q: | Do I need to donate the entire amount that I pledged at once? |
| A: | No, donations can be spread out equally over a five-year period.
| Q: | Who will know how much I donated? |
| A: | Donors will be recognized on the GCRA website, unless donors request otherwise.
| Q: | Are donations tax-deductible under IRS Code? |
| A: | Yes.
